The Harpoonist and the Axe Murderer at the Legendary Horseshoe Tavern Nov 13th, 2014

Toronto’s legendary Horseshoe Tavern played host to the Harpoonist and the Axe Murderer along with openers The Key Frames and The Fugitives on Novemebr 13th, 2014. I showed up early to catch all three bands. Some pretty cool stuff.

Local roots-rockers The Key Frames started the night off with a mix of roots, folk, bluegrass, rockabilly et al.

These guys were followed by west coast indie-folksters The Fugitives. Some incredible harmonies and great songs!

Headliners The Harpoonist and the Axe Murderer, Shawn Hall and Matthew Rogers, performed a great set of roots-blues tunes. Awesome stuff!

The first day of summer was a busy and beautiful day at the Toronto Jazz festival. I started at noon at Nathan Phillips Square were legendary Canadian fusion rock band Lighthouse brought us some of their classics hits and a few new ones too.

Then, I walked over to The Rex Jazz & Blues Bar for a pint and to catch Danny Marks’ entertaining set. Always a jokester this guy, applauding and thanking couples and people as they came thru the front door, made for a few laughs. This was apparently the last Saturday noon-time set he’ll be performing at the Rex until September, a little hiatus.

From here it was up to catch the afternoon set of long time Saturday matinee regulars The Happy Pals at Grossmans. These guys and gals are sure happy, good vibes. They put on a great set of New Orleans jazz and swing party tunes.

They finished up at around 8pm. Now since I wasn’t going to the David Clayton-Thomas show at NPS, I saw that another regular performer was playing at the Reservoir lounge. Tyler Yarema & his Rhythm have a been a weekly Saturday night fixture at the Reservoir since it’s early days.
